How the Be Do Have Process Will Change Your Life in 2024!

Woohoo!! It's New Year's, which means it’s time to "make a New Year's resolution.”

Right?!…

If you're like me, you've noticed that although well-intended, resolutions hardly ever work out. With about a 9-15% success rate, it is a wonder we bother with them at all.

So, if resolutions don't work, what can we do instead?

In this blog, we're diving into the Be, Do, Have process - a process that is easy, measurable and inspires you to think about life in a new way and actually get your results!

The Be Do Have process is not just a goal-setting framework. It's more like a permission giver to honour your dreams and can be a powerful transformative journey towards success in every facet of your life.

The Be Do Have process involves three key steps: Be, Do, and Have.

The first step, 'Be,' focuses on identifying your desired state of being or who you want to become. Who is it you want to be?

The second step, 'Do,' involves defining things you want to do. It may be travelling to Nepal, learning to make ice cream, or taking the children to Yum cha. Maybe you want to volunteer for the environment or take more action in climate mitigation. List all the things you want to do.

The final step, 'Have,' means listing all the things you want to have. It's kind of like your own little Santa wish list post-Christmas.

You can brainstorm these as a family, ensuring all members get a say. By listing your Be Do Haves, you can gain clarity on your goals and create an intentional path towards shaping the life you want to live, and it illuminates a required shift in your mindset, actions, and behaviours to achieve your goals.

The Importance of Setting Personal Intentions for Not-for-Profit Leaders

For leaders in the not-for-profit space, setting personal intentions is so important.

You spend so much of your time serving others and the planet that it's easy to forget about some as equally important: you. We get so caught up in achieving the visions and missions of the organisations we work for, volunteer for and support that we forget to prioritise ourselves.

Personal intentions flow into your work as a community leader. It helps maintain a positive mindset and overcome challenges that may arise in your role, but also, if you are moving towards the things you want to be, do and have in life, you will be equipped to bring more of your whole self to benefit the causes you choose to be a part of.

When you, as a leader, are intentional about your own growth and development, you inspire and motivate your team members to do the same. This creates a culture of continuous improvement and empowers individuals to strive for excellence in their work. Which, in turn, sets us on a more efficient path towards our organisational goals.

And who doesn't want that?

Embarking on the Implementation of the Be Do Have journey with a strategic approach and a commitment to personal growth.

Now that you know what you want to be, do and have. It's time to work on each Goal. If you have a brainstorming list, start by refining it down to the things you want to work on achieving first.

Be kind to yourself here; growth takes work. Working on one goal/area at a time works well, although you may like going all in on a few at a time; the important thing here is to do what feels good to you.

Follow the process below for the best results.

  1. Reflect on Your Desired Goal: Introspect, visualise, and identify the qualities aligning with your goals.
  2. Make it Measurable: Break down each Goal in a way that can be measured: By how much, with what and by when? E.g. A goal to get healthy can be measured by "losing 3kg cleaning eating by 10th April."
  3. Define Actionable Behaviors: Break down your desired state into achievable steps.
  4. Take Consistent Action: Incorporate these behaviours into your daily routine and track your progress.
  5. Celebrate Achievements: Recognise and celebrate your successes to reinforce the connection between actions and outcomes.
